On Wednesday, 29 March the board of independent experts has decided that Kaunas is the city, which will become European Capital of Culture 2022. There were two candidate cities in Lithuania – Kaunas and Klaipėda.

Contemporary Capital is the slogan used by Kaunas for seeking the title of the European Capital of Culture for the year 2022. The team, which organises the European Capital of Culture events, announce that they will try to involve each resident of Kaunas, wherever they live, in the creation of a happy city full of freedom, innovation and the tempo of contemporary culture.

“Congrats to my native and beloved Kaunas officially named European Capital of Culture 2022. Well deserved”, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius, tweeted yesterday.

The European Capital of Culture programme was founded in 1985, and since the very start it has been considered an important driver for uniting European citizens, promoting openness and cultural exchange, and encouraging social and economic development.

In 2022 there will be two European Capitals of Culture: one in Lithuania and one in Luxembourg.
